Baby knitting romper with hood and raglan sleeves (part 3)
Before we start knitting, let’s review how to make increases:
- We make three stitches from one stitch: knit, yarn over, knit.
- Increases are made with the main color yarn from a knit stitch.
- Later, the side stitches from the increases are knitted with the main color, and the central stitch is knitted with the contrast color purlwise.
- As mentioned before, all increases are done on the right side using the main color.
Next, let’s describe how to do short-row knitting in two-color English rib:
-
A turning stitch on the right side is a knit stitch; on the wrong side it is a purl stitch.
-
We do not knit the turning stitch with the main color. Knit with the main color until the turning stitch, leaving the yarn on the wrong side. Switch to the contrast yarn and purl the purl stitches, slip the knit stitches with yarn over. When you reach the turning stitch, wrap it with the contrast yarn, turning the stitch so that the walls swap. Wrap from right side to wrong side. Place the wrapped stitch back on the left needle and turn the work to the wrong side.
-
On the wrong side, knit purl stitches with the main color, slip knit stitches with yarn over. At the turning stitch, do not knit it. Switch to the contrast yarn, knit the knit stitches, slip purl stitches with yarn over. Wrap the turning stitch from wrong side to right side, walls unchanged. Return stitch to left needle and turn to right side.
-
On the right side, lift the wrapped stitch from bottom to top and knit it “grandmother’s way”. On the wrong side, purl the wrapped stitch, lifting it the same way from bottom to top.
-
On the right side, the short-row shaping is almost invisible; on the wrong side, the wraps are visible.
Knitting Instructions
Cast on 37 stitches with the main color. I cast on with loose stitches because we will knit the hood from the neckline. This is row 1.
Slide all stitches to the right needle without turning the work. Take the contrast yarn and knit row 2: slip the first edge stitch, purl 1, slip next stitch with yarn over, repeat to last stitch. The second-last stitch should be purl. Slip the last stitch (edge stitch) without knitting. Turn the work. Rows 1–2 are right-side rows.
Row 3: Knit with main color: purl 1, slip 1 with yarn over. Repeat to end. Last stitch is purl with main color.
Row 4: Do not turn. Slide stitches to the right needle. Knit with contrast yarn: slip edge stitch, knit 1, slip 1 purl with yarn over. Repeat to end. Turn the work.
Note: Edge stitches are always knitted with the main color: knit on right side, purl on wrong side. Contrast yarn is always left on the front, knitting the last stitch before edge stitch.
